McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Michael Lehnardt was a student at Brigham Young University majoring in art and science. He painted the mural as part of his senior project. His original sketch was based on Raphael's School of Athens and included many widely recognized characters. As the mural evolved, the artist focused more on traditional fairy tale characters.
